Let's Talk Fiber!
Since a couple of you asked about fiber, specifically over-fibering, I thought we could turn it into a topic of its own. Besides, it was a rather bland and ordinary day and I have nothing else to talk about. :)
From what I understand, the recommended amount of fiber for adults is 20-40 grams per day. Fiber is important because it helps "move the mail", so to speak. It absorbs large amounts of water in the bowel system, which helps everything process so much more smoothly and comfortably. If you know what I mean. Studies have shown that a fiber-rich diet can lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, along with a whole host of other maladies and diseases. Also, allegedly fiber "bulks" up in the digestive system and leaves the digester feeling full longer. I haven't noticed any big difference in that regard, to be honest.
I usually hit somewhere in the lower 20s. The daily menu I listed for Monday was around 25 grams. Kind of on the low end hee-hee of the range. I would like to get closer to the '30' mark on a regular hee-hee basis, and I'll be exploring different whole grains to help me get there. But that's in the future.
Too much fiber can cause a gassy, bloaty feeling, and yes, I have experienced that before. My abdomen sounds like the cat fight to end all cat fights is going on in there on occasion. Fortunately, I live alone, and at work, I have an office with a door so it hasn't become too troublesome so far. :)
Too little fiber, on the other hand, can cause constipation and bloating and has been linked to diseases such as diverticulitis, IBS (irritable bowel syndrom), liver enzyme malfunctions, colon cancer, and higher cholesterol. It has even been linked to increased PMS symptoms and acne!
Great sources of fiber include whole grains, fruits & veggies, nuts & seeds, and legumes of the beans, peas, and lentil varieties. Most, if not all, of my fiber intake is in grains, fruits, and veggies. I do have nuts sometimes, but I definitely need to explore more options.
Increasing fiber intake is one of those things that's best accomplished with the tippy-toe approach. That is, s-l-o-w-l-y. We don't want to overwhelm the system. :-)
Okay, I'm sure I left out loads of info, so feel free to jump in with what I missed, or if you're aware of any misinformation I might have accumulated over the years. Anyone with more Fiber Facts?
Hope you all have a wonderful and--ahem--productive weekend! :D

Okay, you're making me laugh. Really, really laugh, a lot. But that could be because I've been up for almost 20 hours. I don't know.
Liver enzyme malfunctions? Really?!? I SO did not know that. Because my ED gets, like, negative fiber and always has. Hot damn. Maybe that was it.
Anyway. That's about all I have to say. Sorry for the completely irrelvant and idiotic punch-drunk comment but, you know, just wanted to leave some comment love as we say in MySpace land.
I have GOT to go to sleep.

I always look at fiber first when I look at labels, a little something that stuck with me from my weight watcher days (to bad it wasn't the portion control that stuck, but oh well).
Hmm...I suspect I'm not eating enough fiber now. Bugger.
Hmmm. That's interesting. I have recently begun tracking my fiber (on dailyplate) and BLC (Before Lifestyle Change) I was probably getting between 10-12g of fiber per day and tend now to get between 20-40 ish. I have definitely over-fibered once and that was unpleasant...
However, the point I was going to make is that I have suffered from adult acne all my adult life (I got acne when I was like 13 and it NEVER went away.)
Except now it has. Not ENTIRELY, but it's definitely noticeably receding. Maybe I can have an adult complexion for the first time in my life. That would be good.
Healthy fiber-ing...well I get some, though I'm not sure how much, so I should start tracking that.
ey Cammy - What a fiberlicious post! :-)
You know what's funny? When I'm on plan, eating my 5 fruits and veggies, drinking lots of water, eating low fat - I get, ahem, backed up. I once tracked every gram of fiber I ate when I'm on plan, and I was getting between 30-35 per day. So I asked my doctor what was up, and he said it's just my body. Nothing wrong, it's just me. He suggested adding supplemental fiber (the kind you mix in water.) Yuck! I found a high-fiber bar I enjoy (called Gnu bars – two Points each) that seems to, ahem, push me over the edge!
Ok, now I'm SURE that's much more info than you ever wanted to know about me!! LOL!
Have a great weekend!
have a good weekend and thanks for stoping by my blog
thanks for answering the fiber queries!! I hope to find a good fiber place..I get so uncomfortable w/fiber..maybe if i had more water. Sounds like it's doing your body some good!
ahhh....fiber....I just can't seem to fit enough in.
Interesting studies are out though that indicate fiber might not be as vital to health as previously thought. Every day though - I eat my raw veggies in order to fit more fiber in! Thanks for the pun-filled post!
I've learned that extra fiber really helps me become a "regular" guy. I sometimes take bunches of generic psyllium capsules, usually with green tea. They really help.
And thanks for posting on my blog!
Boy, did this one ever hit below the belt (heehee). I took in too much fiber yesterday and am paying for it today. Thanks for all the tips.
