Rest Day for Wimps
Today is my Cammy Doesn't Have to Exercise Day. And not a moment too soon! I thought about putting it off until Saturday, but my body said, "I don't think so."
For the first time in a while, I wimped out and couldn't finish all of my workout with the trainer last night. (I owe him a set of 40 mountain climbers and some makeup planks, because mine were pit-i-ful.) He said I wasn't a wimp, because we did a bunch of stuff including some sort of Hungarian or Romanian dead lifts, but I felt like a wimp. My arms just wouldn't hold me up after the first plank. Stupid arms.
In the post workout stretch and wimp/not-a-wimp discussion, we decided the likely culprit was my Tuesday night cardio workout. (I swear, it seemed like a good idea at the time.) I got it in my head to "elliptical" a 5K, since running hasn't worked out, and somewhere along the way I decided to try to do it in less than 35 minutes. I did (34.48), but I didn't realize that all that to-ing and fro-ing with the arms was a fairly intense workout in and of itself. Since I had just put those arms through a vigorous workout the day before, they really didn't need all that activity.
Add in last night's workout, and it's no wonder they wimped out. Poor tired arms.
So let this be a lesson to you! :) Rest days are important for building stamina. Don't get so caught up in challenging your new, fit self to scale greater heights that you forget to rest every now and then.
Have a great day!

Cammy, thanks to you (and a few others) I started exercising today! You are a great inspiration.
Such wise words.... thank you for the reminder. :)
Blessings,
Donna
Thanks for the visit to my blog and the advise for the dentist. I will surely try it when I go back.
Our bodies NEEEED the rest, definitely! It's a process - work 'em, rest 'em, work 'em, rest 'em ... gotta have both.
You're working your tail off! Good for you! (But don't forget about the rest next time. hee hee!)
You're so right about rest days. Muscles need time to recover.
I have to admit to having done too much last week and said I would lay off this week but it's been too nice! To my trips to the gym I've biked once, went for walks, did 2 of my runs and a whole lot of digging in the garden! Whew!
I'll rest Sunday (maybe ;)
I think those days of rest are very important. I always try to take a break for that reason. good advice!
Ahh, Cammy...as always you make us feel like we are working out with you. Deborah says in a previous comment that she started exercising today, and you are a great inspiration. I feel exactly the same way. I've slacking because of my hip, but I'm ready to get moving again. However, there will be no 34 minute elliptical thrill for me. Well not any time soon. Thanks as always.
Selma
Thanks for a useful reminder that's as old as creation itself.
Enjoy your rest day!
As with all things one has to find a balance. Exercise hard and rest well!
Rest days are TOTALLY important! I'm glad you took yours. If you start feeling like a wimp, compare yourself to me - I have two rest days a week! :-) Jillian-mandated so I don't feel too badly, but it seems sort of lazy. I always need them though.
My mountain climbers sucked last night too. I'm supposed to do them for a minute at a time but I could only manage 30 seconds at a time. My problem was my arms too but it wasn't cause I'd worked them the night before! I was just a wimp period. :-)
I think your elliptical 5K is freakin' AWESOME and you absolutely cannot use the word "wimp" in the same post as that description!
Way to go. I hope you enjoyed your rest day a LOT. :-)

You are a workout superstar and sooooooo deserve a rest day!!! How was it? I am taking one..or two.. also..Have a wonderful weekend!!!
Cammy, you are just plain Awesome. :) I love reading your posts, they can really help brighten my day.
I've been inspired by your post in a different direction, however -- the name of your rest day caught my attention and I thought, "Yes, that's what I've been doing, thinking of off days as days I don't HAVE to exercise."**
So, instead of naming my rest days, "BikiniMe Doesn't Have To Exercise Day", I'm going to name them, "BikiniMe Doesn't Get to Exercise Day" and try to shift my perspective just a little bit towards the direction of "I love exercise!"
..........
**I do not mean to imply in any way that we share this viewpoint, only that my own perspective was brought to my attention by the name of your rest day. :)
YUP! Time off is essential.
Something I've done in the past week aggravated one of my knees, so this week, my trainer's really been working on the arms. I'm out of town until Sunday for a business trip and she wants me to use this time not to work out (despite the fact there's a Bally's one mile from my hotel.
It's actually been hard for me--I usually try to compensate for all the restaurant eating by going to the gym...but I can already tell my knee is feeling better.
Point of all that--rest is good! And we shouldn't feel guilty about needing to take some time off.
I agree about the rest days. I read a couple of runners blogs and they all seem to have more stamina after a week of rest if they have been training hard.
Sounds like you had a heck of a workout though.
Have a nice weekend.
