Mommy, Where Do Blog Names Come From?
As I was touring my Google reader last night, I was struck by the...unusual nature of some blog names, especially among my fitness buddies. Some names are staightforward, some aren't. It got me to wondering how you all came up with your blog names or why you chose the ones you did.
For myself, if you've been here any length of time, you know that my approach to fitness is a gradual one. I've made small changes over time that have brought me to where I am now, and there will be more changes in the future. One day, pre-blog, when I was explaining this concept to a co-worker, and trying to emphasize the need for patience, she interrupted me to ask, "Yes, but what diet are you on?" I took a deep breath and said, "It's the Tippy Toe Diet. You sneak up on it."
She never did get it, but it was a lightbulb moment for me. :)
Later I extended the analogy to include an image of myself standing on my tippy-toes reaching for the stars. It works for me either way.
But enough about me! How did you choose your blog name?
Personal note: Thanks for all the kind comments and well wishes on my bling day!

I think mine's pretty straight forward since I live on a mountain, I wanted to get that in somehow. And Cara was the one that came up with it for me.
I love the analogy of standing on "tippy toes" and reaching for the stars. Wow!!
You never cease to amaze me with your insight!!
I love your tippy-toeing, Cammy. I keep using you as inspiration for people who talk about how hard it is to make such a big change...you definitely got it right.
You know my blog name's not that original...but I kept visualizing the "notebook" I was always promising myself I'd keep, where I'd write down everything I ate and all my exercise, yada, yada...and never did it because I'm too unfocused too keep track of a notebook for more than a week. So I thought I'd do it digitally, and DietBook was born. And that really was how it started...but I should probably rename it something else like "Random Unfocused Ramblings of a Disordered Mind" or something of that nature, to reflect what it's morphed into. :-)
I hope you have a wonderful day and are still enjoying the heck out of your new bling!

I've liked the name of your blog since I discovered it through healthy challenge. The name is probably why I clicked on it in the first place. Obviously the content and it's author kept me coming back.
My blog name comes from a quote in the movie When Harry Met Sally.
"The fact that you're not answering leads me to believe you're either (a) not at home, (b) home but don't want to talk to me, or (c) home, desperately want to talk to me, but trapped under something heavy. If it's either (a) or (c), please call me back"
But there is also a more literal meaning for me, you know like things in my life that weigh me down, both physically and emotionally. Or just stuff on the bookcase that is my life that I like to take down and talk about. (wow, kind of a mixed metaphor there, but you get the point ;)).
Great question
Mine was just kinda silly really, I'm called Ani and I like pesto and ani pesto had a nice ring, it sounded a bit like antipasto which I love too... hrmm see not very insightful :$
I did make a couple of decisions when naming my blog though. Even though it's only about my health, stopping bingeing and weightloss (mentions of other things are only in the context of these subjects) I deliberately didn't want a "weightlossy" name.
I decided I didn't want something negative and berating about myself (lose the lard, big girl walking, tubby ani etc - not that any of them were actual candidates at the time I just thought them up now). I thought that wasn't in the spirit of the positive direction I'm taking.
But on the other hand I also didn't want something so incredibly positive it would shame me and make me feel uncomfortable if I've had a bad day. So instead I just went for a totally non-descript name :-)
After so many attempts at weight loss... starts and stops, this time I'm simply doing it, and I'M GONNA BE everything I wanna be.
ps. forgot to say that I too love the name of your blog and your attitude. "Tippy toes" are such great happy words: makes me think of happy and innocent times.
Plus approaching a healthy lifestyle in lots of small steps is the perfect way - I've learned how easy it is to crash and burn by setting yourself too big a mountain to climb in just one go.
this is my first time visit your blog. WOW!! Look at what you have done. You look GREAT!
What a cute story!! I love your take on the whole thing!!
I came up with Life Happens because I couldnt use *%it Happens *grin*. I came up with it for me years ago when life really sucked and I was trying to have a better attitude about things by saying " Ah Well *&it Happens"... and let what ever was bugging me go. Now it just kind of stuck as Life Happens every day =0)
Great post!
*huggles*

Have you ever read The Very Hungry Little Caterpillar? There's this section in the book where the caterpillar eats a few apples, but he's still hungry... and then he eats four oranges and he's still hungry, etc etc... and then he eats a salami, a lollipop, a pickle, a piece of chocolate cake, an ice cream, a sausage, a hot dog...
The next day, he had a stomach ache!
And he wasn't a hungry little caterpillar anymore, he was a BIG FAT Caterpillar...
But then, he eats a nice green leaf and goes to hide in his cocoon for a while and becomes a beautiful butterfly...
So... yeah. It's a cute story, I often feel like the Hungry Little Caterpillar... I'm still working on eating my nice green leaf, but I'm hoping that beautiful butterfly is waiting for me, somewhere down the road.
Mine comes from a drunk Scotsman in a hotel bar on a business trip. He asked me what the 'problem' was with my eyebrows (they're so blond they're invisible almost) and when I got a little testy he told me not to worry because I was still pretty. He said I reminded him of a relative of his with the same problem. "Barely visible eyebrows?" I asked. "No, she's like you, she's very pretty but she has a weight problem." Now I don't know how good of a pick up line that is in Scotland, but all it got him on the US Gulf Coast was a few choice 4 letter words, and the end of the bar to himself.
It was about a week later when I started WW and my blog. 'Girl with a Problem' just popped into my head and I thought it was a good fit. After all, the first step is to admit you have a problem right?
Well one problem at a time. Once I tackle the weight problem, I guess I'll move on to the eyebrow problem. Ha Ha. What a colossal jerk!
Love your blog by the way!
I love your blog name, and I agree with Ani, that tippy toes are a positive image. When I was 11 years old, I figured that when I grew up if I started a fashion line, it would be called Trisaratops, like Try-Sara-Tops - since my name's Sara. Now, I am too vain to not use it, even though I'm not a fashion designer. And I like the idea of a lounge, where you can hang out and talk about anything. When I was wanting to start my blog, I wanted a place to talk about weight loss, but also to share other things, and I was envisioning reaching a finish line (goal weight), and then having a place to talk about other things too! Maybe someday...
My blog is named EvolvingMom. I actually racked my brain trying to think of a name that was representative of me, my weight loss journey, and the big changes in my life. I chose EvolvingMom because it just seemed to fit.
I really enjoy your blog a lot. It makes me laugh! And I second what everyone has said about Tippy Toes. Very catchy!
First of all, I just loved your Aha! moment. And so positive.
My chair was my favorite spot after my daughter was born and I became a SAHM for the first time. All I did was sit in that chair, hold my daughter and watch TV. I also saw my weight balloon from 164 to 201 pounds. About 2 1/2 years ago I had the chair reupholstered and it didn't look anything like my beloved old chair. In fact it looked grumpy to me . . . hence the grumpy chair dieter.
The chair is a reminder that I don't do that anymore - I'm active and eat healthy. In fact, I think I have only sat in that chair 3 to 4 times since it was reupholstered.
I love you blogname! And I'm enjoying the comments.
My very first starter blog, which I had for a few days before changing to a different blogging platform was called Fertile and Healthy. I didn't really give it any thought, that was what it was going to be about. I wanted something positive, so using self-limiting, negative words and phrases was never an option
When I changed I decided that it sounded cumbersome and changed it to Fertilehealthy. And while I change my background and layout at least once a month, the name will remain. I've registered the domain and hope to be posting for a long time to come as fertilehealthy.
I love this blog...I just found it from another persons blog :) good luck on your diet and check out my weight loss blog.
thank you so much Cammy. I try not to beat myself up when I eat a bit more than the calorie limit I know I have to be patient but I try not to make the slips to often. I can wait to lose the big 85 like you :) you are a great inspiration.
My blog name was chosen to reflect my change of focus. I'd been too focused on losing weight and not enough on getting fit. Since I started getting fitter the weight has just melted off.
LOVED finally learning where your name came from.
mine is OBVIOUS (and not. I went through about a bazillion before I settled. some more humorouslyBAD than others) as Im going more for the MISFIT than the Miss. Fit.
Im quirky that way :)
M.
I must say that I've always loved the name of your blog. Now I know the whole story!
Alas, mine isn't too catchy but I guess that's okay!
Have a great weekend (any bike rides planned?)
I'm using my new blog to keep track of blogs that I like. My name is Jim, and I call my new blog ...
"Jim's Favorite Blogs"
Obviously, I'm not very imaginative.
my blog name came from the fact that I was thin, then gained weight, but always knew that thin person was still inside me. that is why I never gave up on losing weight or never accepted that I could be that weight. I wanted to set that thin girl inside of me free.
I think the story behind your blog name is great!
Mine was a combo of my favorite features of my kids (I really don't even blog about them that often lol) its
Little Boy Blue and A Redhead too
(my son has the biggest blue eyes and longest eyelashes and my dd has this gorgeous mane of red hair).
I love the Tippy toe diet, I'm on the same one!!
I love your blog name and the picture of you on the scale... mine is pretty straight forward too. I'm tired of my weight clouding up my life... I'm tired of weathering the storm - it's time for some Sunny days! And besides that - - I'm Sunny and it's all about my days! LOL
I just wanted there to be "less of me" than there was and hence the name was born. It's fun to find out where people have gotten thier inspiration from. It was a great question to ask!
"Twins in Shape"
Pretty self explanatory: my twin sister and I started up a joint blog to keep eachother accountable to weight loss
I was looking for something alliterative to go with Kathy and came to "calculate" and decided it was very descriptive of all the calculating I did every day...I calculated WW points, knitting gauges, recipe nutritionals, puzzles, all day. So "Kathy Calculates" it became! Great idea for a question!
I love the Tippy Toe name! You're definitely tippy-toeing your way to success!
I started my original blog and wanted to use alliteration, being an English teacher and all. A nickname of mine is "Bella," so I went with Bella's Bold Brilliant Blog. It just had a nice ring to it. I'm very bold in attitude and demeanor, and I was hoping the things I would write would be thought of as brilliant by some, even if it was only me at first.
Then when I decided to start a separate weight loss blog, I called it Bella on The Beach because I had begun the South Beach Diet. Now that I'm doing something else to help me lose weight, "the beach" has come to symbolize me being able to go to the beach wearing a bathing suit -- something I haven't done in over 10 years. I'm hoping the bathing suit will eventually become a bikini, but we'll just have to wait and see.
Great blog entry! It's been fun to read about the origins of everyone's blog titles.
Mine is/was pretty straight forward. I had gained weight and no longer fit into my size 6s, which I had been in for over 15 years. It was like an affirmation for me, every time I'd log in, there it was staring me in the face, " I WILL be a size 6 again!" Then once I reached that goal I changed it to "I AM a size 6 again!" Mainly to state the fact and to prove that I did it! More affirmation that I can't deny. Especially because I would be really embarrassed to have to change back to the original title. It's my proof and a way of telling myself that I DID IT :).
I think I need to try that Tippy Tow Diet - it is working great for you.
I needed to finally figure out why I be successful in losing substantial amounts of weight and feel amazing only to take the fastlane track back up the scale to heavier and heavier all time highs. So the question I need to answer is "Why the Weight?."
Loved reading all the comments and will have to check out some new blogs here after I have lunch with Mom.
Enjoy the day!
Opps. Of course I meant "Tippy TOE Diet."
Very fun post---as always. Now there are so many more blogs I want to get to!! Mine was a not so creative get my self together by the time i turn 40..originally I was going for 40lbs by my 40th birthday..but I will be reassessing that goal..andjust getting there in my 40th year..I have already made many positive changes and have become "more fit" in just a few mos...so it's all good. I love the tippy toe approach. Also..I SEE YOU joined the WOMAN challenge..YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYYAYAAY!
I think mine is pretty straight forward too. I was going to be the fat bridesmaid in my best friend's wedding, so I adopted my title as the Fat Bridesmaid and ran with it.
I love the idea of a tippy toe diet though!
Mine is a carryover of a screen name I used on a number of bulletin boards. Anyway, although I live in West Virginia, I will always be a loyal Oklahoma Sooner - hence WVSooner.
I wish I could change my blog name, but I don't know to what.
