Black Cloud, Blue Skies
You can't help but think it's going to be one of those days when this is how your day starts. That's right, flat tire, and this is as far as I got changing it. The lug nuts were set by the factory, and despite my improved strength I wasn't able to budge them a centimeter. I even stood on the ^$*@ lug wrench and--nada! I doubt I could have budged them at my previous weight, either. It was like they were welded on. When I next buy a new car, I will ask the dealer to break the seal on the lug nuts and have them torqued on by hand. Then I, a mere mortal, have at least a slim chance of removing them. I had to pay a tire service to come out and even though I had done what you see here, they still charged me the full (and hefty!) price. Adding insult to injury, the tire couldn't be patched and worse, all four need replacing. I managed two today, the other two will wait until next month.
Reeling from the double whammy (I spent almost $300 before 8 a.m.!), I headed off on my errands, black cloud notwithstanding.
And then something wonderful happened. All traffic stopped while Mama Duck and her teens took a stroll. A group of about 20 had crossed just before these stragglers. It's hard to stay under a black cloud when you get a moment like this.
My first major stop of the morning was a farmer's market. This one is at the train station in downtown Memphis and features, as one might expect, all locally grown vegetables as well as other vendors selling all sorts of natural or handmade products. I bought tomatoes, organic granola, and an ointment for my aching hamstrings.I also learned that the local bike club sponsors a downtown bike ride that leaves from the market. I'll have to check that out further.
My favorite purchase, though, was a bouquet of fresh flowers from a local grower. In addition to these splashy zinnias, he made me a big, beautiful bouquet that included sunflowers, gladiola and {insert name of two flowers I can't identify here}.What black cloud?
I returned home from errands in early afternoon, snuck in an hour's nap, and then headed out for a five-mile walk. As it turns out, it will be my last outdoor five-mile walk until the weather cools. I ran out of water around Mile 4, and my fanny was dragging. I'll either bike, use the treadmill here, or hit the elliptical at the gym for any longer workouts for the foreseeable future.
And that brings us up to now. I've just massaged the new Ginger Muscle Rub in to my fractured hamstrings and am waiting for it to miraculously return them to their underdeveloped but pain-free state prior to Wednesday night when Trainer Matt thought it would be fun to wrap a towel around my feet and hang from it while I attempted to "curl" him. My hamstrings may thank him later, but right now? Not so much.
A perfectly ordinary day in the end and not a cloud in the sky. I hope your day was just as blessed.

Well I certainly applaud you for attempting to change the tire yourself! I've read how to do it but never done it before. Don't know if I would attempt to or not. But good job! And wow, those flowers are gorgeous. I had my first experience with the farmer's market recently and they also had beautiful fresh flowers. What a nice way to brighten up the house!
Ouch!! I would have no idea how to change a tire. But I do beleive the tire is stored below my childrens seats (carseats and all!!)
I love Farmers Markets, they are such a blast. Its so fun to talk to local growers. We went to one last week & I swear it was like a carnival. They had an inflatable bouncer & a clown!! Plus your outside in the sun, how can you beat that?!?!
I SO applaud you as well.
went to the garage a few weeks ago
found a flat
called roadside.
(and the GINGER? I need to go back and see if I missed where you purchased that---I think Id love it.)
Miz.
Well at least it got better! Glad you had fun at the market it's always good to find new things ;)
Darn those flat tires, especially when it involves having to buy an entire new tire. No wait, not just one, two, and two more later. Ugh.
You have a great attitude, and the rest of the day was awesome! I've never been to a farmers market. Perhaps in the fall, I'll give ours a try. Too hot for it now (112 F yesterday, ugh).
Happy Sunday!
Been there done that (with the tire). I think they do put some kind of glue on the lugs at the factory. My "X" husband made me learn to change a tire the first year we were married. It came in really handy when I was on a trip to Florida with just the girls. They were about 9 and 10 and one had the flu. The blow out occured on a lonely stretch of I-95 in Georgia at about 11:00 at night. I got it changed and discovered the one I'd just put on needed air, a lot of air. I pulled of at the next exit and all the service stations were closed. We had to sleep in the car until someone opened. Since that was back in the "olden days," there weren't any cell phones and believe it or not no pay phones in this area.
Glad your day brightened a lot after that fiasco.
Thanks for the pictures.
Hope Cammy's hammy feels better.
Thats such a lovely surprise! Hope the rest of your weekend turns out just as beautifully:)
I just LOVE flowers...and yours look so beautiful! Hope your hammy feels better soon!
That's great you tried to change the tire yourself. I would be calling for help right away! Looks like your black cloud had a silver lining after all. Glad your day turned into a good one.
we trainers are cruel, no?
my favorite is to sit someone in a rolling office chair, make them sit up straight- no touching the chair back, and pull themselves down the hallway by using their heels. and then i ride on the back for extra resistance. sounds easy cause you are sitting, but no. it isnt.
i need to buy new tires soon, they are bald. stupid unforseen expenses.
Those zinnias are gorgeous!
I love the fact that you found several positive things about a day that started off so rocky. Your attitude is amazing!
I wish I had my camera with me this morning when I went on a run before going to church. Ahead of me was a parade of Canadian Geese, 6 full grown with 2 babies smack dab in the middle.
What a sight to behold! I'm glad that you're day turned out so much better towards the end!
Wow ... way to stay positive! That is why I love AAA ... they will come change your tire for free! I love the flowers ... I am always buying fruit and veggies ... but I need to strat bringing flowers home too! And you have to share the info on the ginger rub! :)
I love the fact that you had your camera with you to document your day. Those zinnias would put a smile on anyone's face. I loooove flowers :)
Well, you DID have a joyful day! Way to get all the nasty out of the way early so you can then revel in the beautiful. :-)
I do applaud your ability to take notice of all this wonderfulness. So often, when it starts off badly, we end up letting that sink us into that black cloud and we don't look around for the sunshine. Well done!
And you got further than I would have with the tire. I used to be able to change one...so I applaud you for that too. :-)
Hope today is just as blessed!
