Step Up!!

During some work-oriented link-hopping, I found this creative little acronym, and I like it for the fit-life change especially. Not surprising since it's basically what I've been doing for the past 18 months. Only I wasn't bright enough to create the acronym. :)

STEP UP FOR CHANGE

1. Sense what you need to change for the better.
2. Think creatively of ways to make your life work.
3. Energize yourself to charge up your life.
4. Plan your strategies for action.
5. Use resources and tools to aid you.
6. Perform regular review to improve.

My comments:
#2 & 4 are my favorite parts of the process. I love inventing new challenges for myself or "work-arounds" for situations that usually present problems. For example, I took three vacations last year and lost weight on two of them. I think I would've lost on the third one if I had eaten more calories. (I didn't factor in how much walking I was doing at the BlogHer Conference and most of that walking with my computer bag strapped to my back.)

#3 is HUGE. There's a great quote attributed to Sarah Bernheardt: "Energy creates energy." Every success is a spark and a bunch of those sparks creates a fire, and when you reach that stage, there is NO turning back. All of your attention is forward-focused and you know the results will follow. Sure, there are down times, but when there's that much energy in your body, the negativity just won't stick. (Believe me, I tried!)

#5 for me was Sparkpeople, Fitness Together, this blog, and your blogs. (See sidebar for links.)

#6 made me laugh. IMO, "performing regular reviews" does NOT mean weighing oneself every half hour. ;-)

How is this similar or dissimilar to your plan? Are there elements you would add to it or omit completely? I'm always curious...

Thanks Cammy for the hug!

I think this is a great acronym! :D Thanks for sharing it. My main thing I need to do is consistency. It's so easy to go on autopilot especially when you are pulled in many directions. It's easy to just slip into that mode. And wake up many moons later and sigh...why can't I see what I am doing sooner(?). Or why even bother, when I'm just going to go back into autopilot mode when I get overwhelmed again. You know this whole process is just plain tough! But I'm not going to give up! I know you aren't either! :)

Ok #6 made me laugh too ... maybe you should weigh yourself every hour instead of half hour ... lol.

wait, you dont have a scale strapped to your back so that you can weigh every 5 minutes or so?

I might leave mine at home today then.

I LOVE YOUR ACRONYM.
youre so creative.

for me I need the S of silence and STILLNESS and (intro)Spectiveness to succeed.

Thanks for the comment.....you are so right on about just feeling better about being on track. I made my goal this week and I feel good about it, but I was feeling good before I even stepped on the scales.
thanks for the encouragment :)

Hmm, at the moment I don't have a plan, perhaps that is part of my problem. Not that I'm really having a problem, more just feeling my way to see what works for me and doesn't. I will definitely keep this in mind though, and may have to go check out that sparkle site. Thanks again for always providing the best info! :)

Sounds exactly like my plan. I love the acronym. I think I am going to do one myself.

Also I'm glad this is your plan too it helps to know there are people out there to help.

Wow - that sounds like a lot of work! LOL
But it does sound like someone planning for success. A great checklist to see if you're on target..

Number 3 is huge for me as well!! I agree, every success is a spark. Sometimes I think instead of a fire I stomp them out. Maybe I get afraid of that fire!!

Hi Cammy,

How are you? This is Wekie here.

I'm very pleased to know that you've found my acronym useful.
I came up with this acronym because, as a trainer, I'm engaged by the Singapore Government agency and its statutory boards, in conducting some nation-wide courses, to help empower women in Singapore to effectively handle life's challenges.

These STEP UP acronym is designed to be practical and applicable to everyone because I teach them in my seminars to help others Step Up for Change! (as noted in my own blog: wekie.com)

Just to help clarify number 6: Perform regular review to improve.
The real intention behind this is to ensure that one does not lay on the laurels but consistently improve on whichever plans you have made.

As in life itself, there is no perfect plan and things do change, hence one must be aware of what works and what doesn't.

It's based on my principle: If it's not working, CHANGE it. If it's working, MAKE IT BETTER!

And the word, 'regular' is definitely subjective. This is in accordance to whatever you are undertaking, be it in working on diets, minor projects or life's challenges. So long as you find the pace comfortable for you. Some of my participants review, reflect and improve their plans every day while other people might do it every quarterly.

Once again, thanks for dropping by my blog and it's an honor to be of help.

May all the readers and you Excel Beyond Excellence in all areas of your life!

With warmest wishes,
Wekie
