Makeover Monday: Walk This Way
One of my primary forms of cardio exercise is walking. People often ask me if I ever get bored with it, if it doesn't get to feeling too routine or mundane.
Short answers: No, no and hell no.
For one thing, I love being outdoors and even though the exercise is the same, the scenery is constantly changing around me, even when I'm just walking around the neighborhood. Plus you never know when you might have to save some wildlife.Another factor to consider is that not all walks are created equal. Some days I stride, some days I scurry, and some days I do both. And then, of course, some days I just walk and feel the sun and breathe fresh air. By varying my technique, I can activate and use different muscle groups at different times or on different days.
Family Circle magazine covered this very subject in an all-too-brief article in their September issue. Guess what? I'm about to make it briefer. :) The article included a recommended schedule, but given that we're all at different levels of ability here, I thought I'd focus on the walking and leave the when and how long to you.
Here are some variations for you to consider for your walks:
The Heel-Toe Step – This one is simple. You focus on putting your heel on the ground and push off with your toes. Repeat with other foot.
The Straight-Leg Walk – For this step, you envision yourself wearing a mini-skirt (you too, guys) and are having to hurry to catch a bus. I think of it almost as a scoot step and confess that this is not a step I've ever done.
The Tea-break Walk – A really stupid name for this step, if you ask me (which they didn't). They also refer to it as the "Morning Walk," proving that one goofy name was apparently not enough. That aside, it's my favorite kind of walking: long strides with arms swinging straight out in front and behind you. I let every ounce of pride and accomplishment I feel flow through me, and I move. For our purposes, I'm changing the name of this step to The Pride Walk. If you don't try any of the others, please try this one.
The Short-step Walk – Here, you take small steps, placing one foot in front of the other no more than two steps ahead. It would be a good middle ground between the striding "Pride Walk" and the Straight-Leg Walk. And no mini-skirt is required (unless you want to.)
The Feather-light Step – In this step, you lengthen your spine, pull your belly in and roll from your heel through your toes as you walk.
You can also vary your walk by combining different steps. Alternate five minutes doing one type of step with five minutes of doing another and so on. Or you could do what I do and adjust your steps to the music you're listening to at the time.
Add extra variety on some days by walking hills or stairs and for even more fun, try walking up and down them backward. (Might help to have a friend or lookout available for this one if you're on a street or sidewalk.)
Finally, don't forget to take a walk every now and then just for the fun of it. Maybe invite friends or family along. The goal is just to be outdoors and enjoying life, to appreciate that you are able to do so.
Okay, dear Readers. That's all I have (the Family Circle people, too, apparently). Do you have any walking steps or techniques to share? Here, or your place, it's up to you.
As always, I hope any of these suggestions will prove to be useful, and I thank you for stopping by.
Have a great week, everyone!

The Tea-break Walk description reminds me of the friends episode were Phoebe runs without abandon. Something about just having pride in what you’re doing and making larger motions sounds cool.
I need to walk more but I need to train my dogs to heel first. My walk could be labeled "trying to keep my 70 lb dog from dislocating my shoulder walk", where you stagger your feet to keep balance and constantly tug with one arm on a leash. Not fun and probably not effective either!

Now you've got that stupid song in my head and it will be there all day (Walk This Way), thanks loads.
Great post and great advice.
I too vary my steps according to the music I'm listening to. I even make the last song on my playlist a slow one for the cooling down portion and imagine dancing in the arms of the one I love...wait I don't have a "the one I love" anymore. I'll have to give that one some re-thought. I know, Tom Selleck. He'll do. Ok, gotta go and take a cold shower.
Love walking...lovelovelove it. It is and always will be my go-to form of cardio, because it's simple, doesn't require massive thought, and comes very naturally (unlike bouncing around and stuff, which is NOT how I roll).
I like backward walking for variety, especially on hills; it works a whole different set of muscles and is sort of fun. But yeah, very important to be aware of your surroundings with that one. :-)
My favorite on the treadmill (where it really can get a bit stale sometimes) is to "dance-walk". Which just means that I throw a bounce into my step (and sort of twist my upper body) in time with the music. Works the thigh muscles a little more but also does put a little more strain on the knees, so I don't do it for a long time. But it makes me feel very high-energy, which is nice.
Walking meditations are great too...especially on those glorious sunny, cool days. Very calming and centering, at least for me.
Great post!

What great advice. I love walking. I have been wearing a pedometer. Its kind of fun to make it into a game to get more and more steps the next day and the next day.
Interesting - I'll have to try some of these walks when I go out tomorrow morning. Perhaps the "skirt" walk :) or maybe better the "pride"one.
COMPLETELY agree with your sentiment "no, no, and hell no". Love love walking. Thanks for the tips!
Wow, I didn't know there were so many different kinds of walking. Mine would best be described as the Disney Stroll. HA!!! Great post. Very informative.
I like the different walks, although being a Brit, it makes me think of the infamous Monty Python sketch about The Ministry of Silly Walks (if you don't know what I'm talking about, look it up on youtube). Anyway, what I'd love now is a walking plan. I really enjoy walking, and I know it's meant to be a good form of exercise, but I'm not sure whether it is at the pace I go. Anyone got a plan, pretty please?
Love walking! I listen to live shows of my favorite band of all time and I can walk forever :-) And sometimes, I just like to be outside with no music, for peace and quiet and relaxation. Ahh. Oh, wait, that's my fantasy life....
I miss my long walks and I can't wait for the weather to cool down a bit so we can walk again.
Thanks for the walking ideas!
I was just pointing out to my husband my trail in Boulder where I walked off hundred pounds. It was my favorite form of exercise until my knee said no more. Now I enjoy my bike for the less stress on my knee but on vacation we did hike... I bought trekking poles. Canes in disguise!
Walking is awesome. Thanks!
Thanks for the info! Walking is the one thing that I do consistently!
