It's Always the Fine Print
I confessed long ago to having a deep love for the Little Debbie Swiss Roll. They are, however, the proverbial horse I rode in on, and so I have avoided them for two years and counting. It's not that I can't have them as an occasional splurge, but more that I would rather spend my splurge calories on something more grand. Like cake!

But that doesn't mean I don't still want a Swiss Roll from time to time. Thus, you can imagine my delight when presented with this while I was out
Okay, so it's not Little Debbie. It's still a SWISS ROLL and it's only 100 calories! That's perfect!Well, maybe not perfect. Even in my salivating glee, I couldn't help but notice the phrase "6 Twin Pack Snack Cakes." [emphasis mine]
I flipped the box over, mouth suddenly dry, praying harder than I did during the last round of thunderstorms, that this didn't mean what I feared. But nooooo, it's true! The '100 calorie' label applies to one roll only! {sob!}
Now most people would wonder why this was such a big friggin' deal, but YOU--my kindred spirits in oversnacking--understand that there is a 0.00-0.05% chance that I could ever open that twin-pack and eat only one Swiss Roll. Some of you would even understand the likelihood that the Tippy Toe guideline for 100 calorie snacks, which is 'one or two per week, if you absolutely MUST', would go right out the window. I'm guessing I'd be good for two twin packs per day. And that's not the way I want to live.
So the Swiss Rolls are still at the store, and it's back to Hershey's Dark Chocolate Nuggets for me. Two per day, maximum. It's the perfect serving size, actually, and I haven't gone over once. One bag lasted me over 3 months. {pats self on back}
The moral of the story? Same as always: Drink your water. Move your body. Read the labels.
Especially the fine print.

I love the moral of your story! Just because the package says, "light" doesn't mean anything. Drinking water and moving your body, what a simple concept! Just a reminder for me to keep it simple.
You have some willpower woman! Staring you right the face and denied! I love the tricky advertising they put on the box. Damn them all!
I'm not even sure if it's fair of you to post a picture of those things! =)
That's a lot of will power, good for you!
Those 100 calorie packs are evil and NEVER taste as good as the real thing even if you can limit yourself to just one.
The fine print is always where all the important information is that they don't really want you to read.
Great job exercising your willpower. You are an inspiration!
LOL wonderful post. I would eat the whole box forget just one pack. I can't bring thing like that home. However, I would love some Dark Chocolate covered peanut M & M's. Hummm wonder if they make those. I haven't strolled the candy isle in over a year. Wish I could say the same for the ice cream freezer.
Unfortunately I can't stop at just two of the nuggets. Like you, I struggle with almost anything that LOOKS like a single serving and that the nutritional information counts as two (or more) servings. For example, who eats a HALF a snack bag of chips??
So true! I don't buy those 100 calorie snacks and I agree with MB--somehow they never taste as good as the original product :)
I think the dark chocolate is a perfect fix for those cravings!
Amazing self-control! Thanks for the post, it makes me realize it actually is possible to pass food up. Forget self-control, you are amazing!
Just as well! If you read the ingredients on those things your hair would stand up!
I would say another moral is "know your own limits". You KNOW you can't eat just one of those things, just like I know I can't have just ONE Oreo!
Good for you for making the healthy choice!
That's exactly what I would have done ... left them at the store. It all sounds good, but reality is I could never stick to that measly little serving size. A bit of a scam if you ask me!
Wow..ok that IS willpower!!!
and grrrr to the label writers!
xo
You are so right. It was that kind of thing that has led more than one person astray after months of reasonable eating. Smart...very smart!
Great moral! I agree with Hanlie. Often if I am about to cave into a treat all I have to do is look at the ingredients list of unpronuncables and I put the treat away muttering that I'll just have to make it myself. Works like a treat!
Every bit true.
Evil snacky non food bits of hell.
I, without exception, embarrassingly admit to always having eaten the entire box of every 100 calorie box of diet sabotage I bought.
I love, however, the pic of that cake. Now THAT would be worth it!
Speaking of 100 calories snack packs, they've started stocked the oreo crisps and choc-chip cookies in my store, I was shocked! I hear so much about them online that it was nice to try the oreo ones finally.
I know what you mean about foods you love. It is soo hard to have just one or two.
Excellent information about the fine print as well.
Great victories this week! You not buying the Swiss Rolls and me not buying Cheetos! Yes, we want better things for ourselves! But you really should switch to the Dove dark chocolate squares. They are sooooo much better than Hersh**. Seriously. ;-)
Path to Health
Stupid Swiss Rolls!
I'd personally pick the cake... but I understand the love- L.D. Honey Buns were my weakness... It's that innocent little face on the package!
Right now, I'm a big fan of dark chocolate... it feels so indulgent that only a little bit is satisfying... perfection!
Sometimes I allude myself that I'm dedicated and then I always realize (after being inspired by you) that I can really challenge myself more.
Right there with ya!! I got some Lil Debbie 100 calorie cookies 'n cream cakes and they are like MICROTINY! Seriously, as big as the words MICROTINY.
One bag- THREE MONTHS? I bow down before you.
Now that I've seen that picture of cake, I'm thinking that cake would be very tasty right now.
I feel your pain when it comes to the Swiss rolls and not being able to hold back from eating more of them- that's why I simply cannot, canNOT, have junk in my house.
Way to go Cammy!
Personally, I could have a case of those things in the house and it wouldn't phase me, but a bag of Fritos (or any of it's cousins--Doritos, Cheetos) would last about 17 seconds.
Little Evil Debs - I could consume a whole box of Zebra cakes around my PMS day (the day before). They are a binge food.
I too, can keep dark chocolate in the house and consume in moderation. I used to buy the dark chocolate covered espresso beans from Target and would enjoy a 1/2 serving every afternoon.
Good for you! You know your limits & what your mind says but the body does not necessarily want to do. Very important to know what you can & can not "stop at" during this process! I am an avid label reader & ALWAYS look at the servings per package! It really trips people up! People end up eating double or triple the fat & calories when they don't read labels!
And even after all these years, I still keep things out of the house that I know are my absolute "I can't stop foods"!
CONGRATS!
Well good work with abstaining, but I don't think you can lash out at them for "fine print" - it pretty darn clearly says "per roll" right there on the front of the box. But maybe you were blinded by the creamy goodness in the photo? :)
Girl, you and I both love those swiss cakes, yikes. I can't have them around either. Like the old Granny Goose commercial says, "You can't Just Eat One!" Well, I just gave away my age with that one didn't I? Anyway, you are an inspiration to us all Cammy and damn those people for packaging two rolls when we can only eat one! Phooey! Linda
