Makeover Monday: Make Up Your Mind

A friend of mine despises exercise. She says it's boring. Sometimes I get bored with exercises, too, so I suggested she try changing her routine or venue, but she says that doesn't help, that it's her mind that's bored, not her body, and that all she thinks about while she's exercising is how bored she is and how much she despises exercising.

That had me scratching my Brazilian Bronze with Honey Caramel highlights head, as it's a completely opposite experience from mine. I can honestly say that in two years of exercising regularly, my mind has never lacked for things to do while I put my body through its movements o' the day. In fact, I will unashamedly confess that sometimes I exercise because of the glorious things my mind gets up to while I'm moving:

Organizing/planning Activities - Now that I'm mostly working out in the mornings, I like to spend a few minutes thinking about and visualizing the day ahead. I don't spend a whole lot of time on it, especially if it's a particularly busy day, because I have a tendency to start stressing about getting busy with that instead of being where my butt is. A few minutes to get the plan in place is okay, though.

Solving Problems - When I was working for The Man, I frequently found answers to lingering problems from the workday while I exercised. Exercise unlocks the right brain, which makes it a great time to find answers.

Creating - Speaking of right brain activity, I lovelovelove to let my creative brain run wild while I work out, especially with respect to my creative writing. I love to compose scenes or dialogue in my head while I'm walking. Good dialogue has a cadence to it, as does walking, so the two work really, really well together. If I have a sex romantic scene in mind, I head to the elliptical where I don't have to worry about getting flattened by a car and thrown into the same gutter my mind is inhabiting at the moment.

Pondering - Some days I dedicate to thinking about nothing in particular. I just let my thoughts skitter around wherever they wish to go. Sometimes I think about your posts and how I might implement some of your strategies, or I think about issues you've presented and whether or not I might have some answers.

Something I don't do but other people LOVE to do is to listen to podcasts while they exercise. Thus, we could easily add Learning to our list.

Then, of course, there's always watching movies or television shows. I love reruns of Monk, when I'm on the home treadmill. It's fun solving crimes while you pedal away on the recumbent bike!

I exercise because it makes me feel better, in body AND in mind. Giving my mind over to negative thoughts while I'm exercising isn't going to help either of those causes. To that end, these are the areas I try to avoid while exercising:

Overthinking
- I do have a tendency to obsess. :)

Comparing
- One of the biggest momentum killers for me is comparing myself to other people, and I'm glad to say I've mostly rid myself of that urge. If I feel the need to measure my activity, I look at what I did yesterday.

Regretting - I discussed this in a previous Makeover Monday. Regretting is just wasted time, in my opinion, and there are much better things my mind could be doing. Like writing a good sex scene. :)

Criticizing - This is something I'm really working hard on right now. Working out at the gym, with all its floor-to-ceiling mirrors, presents a challenge, as I notice every wrinkle, bulge, and flaw. Focusing on breathing, counting, and using proper form helps, along with the knowledge that I'm doing really groovy things for my body.

Like most people, I have a tendency to avoid things I don't enjoy doing. Sometimes finding the joy in it is simply an issue of mind over matter.

I'm going to share this post with my friend, in hopes that it will give her some ideas and maybe the motivation to try again. If anyone here has had the same experience with boredom and/or negative mind games and have any suggestions, I'll add them to the list.

And if this gives you any ideas to try, let us know how it works out for you!

Ok, first, I have to comment on this:"scratching my Brazilian Bronze with Honey Caramel highlights head". Wahahaaha! That was funny for some reason, but I'll bet your hair looks SO good!
Ok, on to the post: I totally agree! This was an awesome post...exercising is definitely MORE than just "burning calories" like most people think...no wonder it's "boring"! You've listed some excellent pointers in the benefits of exercise!

I can understand your friends issue. I am more like you. For me working out getting me thinking about life and clears my head. I think about all kinds of things. I would suggest that your friend sets goals in her mind and it will help, it has helped me. Every year I set a time and goal of the Boilermaker run that I am running this Sunday.

Triple great post!!!! I once heard from what seemed like a reliable source, a psychologist that there are some people whose bodies thrive on exercise, but some bodies that don't get the same "feel good" feeling from exercise.

I would have thought I belonged to the second group that got less of a rush from exercise. However, after doing it for over 11 weeks, I am starting to thrive on it. Yesterday, my motivation to run, was the energy it would give me. Maybe, your friend is like me and just has to get into the regular habit till she starts feeling the mental excitement.

I've reached a point where I look forward to riding my bike every chance I get. Now that I have an iPod, it's a chance to listen to new music and music from the past that I love. I also listen to podcasts and this has really engaged me because I'm nut for learning new things. One of my favorites is the Nutrition Diva.

Yay!! This post came at the right time for me. I'll try and see if some of the ideas work. I'm currently consumed with lethargy, so a boost would be most welcome.

Good point about exercise unlocking brainpower. I find myself doing some of my best thinking with sweat pouring off me.

I used to feel the same way your friend feels... not only about exercise, but about cleaning my house, cooking, etc. The more I learned about health and that it's not possible without physical activity, I realized that I'd have to suck it up (the way I used to do when I clean my house and cook dinner) and do it. To my great surprise I found that my mind became active in exactly the way you describe. Now my body and my mind love exercise! And the added bonus is that I've started loving cooking and don't resent having to clean anymore.

Great, great post! If we look for reasons to avoid something, we WILL find them, but maturity and growth come when we change our attitude and do it anyway, often to find that we love it.

Yeah, I can understand your friends feelings towards working out, I have a couple friends (my mom too) who hate working out and think its boring. I sometimes feel bored on certain days (lazy ones to be exact), but I am more on your point of view.

Loved your post! I think your friend's prob is more a mental one not a boredom one. She just may not want to do what it takes. The key is to find something you like & go with it. Yes, we sometimes have to do a few things we don't BUT there are many people that just pick a sport or class or anything else that they love to do & get moving. Food is a huge part & that has to factor into the equation too. Simple steps but not always easy.

I like the escape of the gym. I go when it is pretty empty. I survived many deaths in the family here & on many days it is just a work on me & nothing else day. I think many of us don't do "us time" well so use your workout time to be good to & focus on you!

Thx again for a great post!

cammy, i'm with you... exercise is good for my outlook. i let my mind wander, i plan, work out solutions to problems, reflect.... i feel so relaxed afterward, both mentally and physically. keep up that positive attitude, love it!

I'm impressed that you can do all of that while working out. I can do some of that while working in the garden or cleaning, but I fear I am more like your friend.

When I first started, I walked on the treadmill. And yes, I read books when on that particular machine. I don't run and my power walk is about 4.0mph at the max. It was the one time I really had to do some reading I hadn't had time for. If I do interval training, it's more challenging to keep track of the time and read at the same time. :-D But I DO IT!

I also have a recumbent bike, which I'm able to watch TV/movies while doing. Mini-tramp - watch TV once I memorized the moves. Or I'll put the workout dvd on my laptop and set the volume on low.

One other suggestion - FIND A FRIEND! Take walks together, join a gym together. It really helps kick boredom if you can talk to a friend. Or commiserate with if you are doing a kick butt class at the gym. Another fun, non-boring form of exercise is dancing! Ballroom is my personal favorite.

One other thing to think about. Is it worth a little boredom to have a hot body??????

Love this... those 'romance' scenes keep me going on the elliptical... because I want to see what happens in the end I end up staying on for an extra long while... I thought that was just me!

Thanks for the reminder that we should not be criticizing our bodies, which is very hard to do when you exercise with mirrors.

I finally started working out in sleeveless shirts, so I could be more comfortable and try not to cringe looking at the "wings" because one day those wings will be no more!

Great post Cammy. However, I have to keep my mind on how my body is moving. If my mind wonders to far ahead of my feet, I stumble. HA!!! Just kidding. Actually at Curves, I listen in to other's conversations. Sometimes, I join in. Well, what is a person to do just moving around in a circle. HA! I bet your hair color is beautiful.

I guess I have been able to identify with your friend in the past. Mainly my motivation was to lose weight so that's all I thought about while exercising. But when my mind started to wander off like what you describe, I began to love it just for the sake of letting my mind wander.

I must say that if I am running, or walking, or on a piece of gym cardio equipment, then I have the same issue as your friend. I start thinking about what I am doing, and then I get bored. As someone previously suggested, audio books and pod casts can help, but I find that sometimes I slow down so that I can listen better. But I guess if I stay on the treadmill and extra 1/2 hour but low down 1/2 mph that still a net gain. Generally, I find that classes or activities with other people keep my mind clear of the boredom.

Just found your blog. It's great!
