Smoothie Success
The fact that my old crappy blender will successfully make a green smoothie if I load the ingredients in a different order is both good and bad news. The good news is that I'm enjoying both green and non-green smoothies; the bad news is that I have no pressing need to go buy the shiny new (and much-desired) Vitamix. I would normally do it in a heartbeat, of course, but Frugal!Cammy refuses. Since she's the one in charge of keeping us from bankruptcy, she wins.
At least for now.
Tonight I tried a green carrot cake smoothie. I didn't exactly have all the right ingredients (had to sub orange-pineapple juice concentrate for the crushed pineapple and plain yogurt for vanilla yogurt) and it tasted an itsy bit off while I was drinking it. The aftertaste, however, is decidedly carrot cake-ish. There are other carrot cake smoothie recipes out there (one that uses baby food carrots!), and I may try another one soon.
The green smoothie option is nice to have for now. I'm a little over done on salads at the moment, so this is a good way to get some green in my daily diet. I've tried (and tried) to like spinach--on its own and in other dishes--but nothing has clicked. The smoothie route works because I can't taste the spinach at all. Honest! I tried my simple chocolate whey protein and soy milk smoothie with and without the green stuff, and there was no discernable difference to my spinach-wary taste buds.
For some absolutely awesome smoothie recipes, follow the link to one of my previous posts. You'll quickly see that the awesome-ness isn't in my post; it's in the comments. I asked and I received--in yummy abundance! {pauses for another moment of gratitude}
That's it for me today...and probably for the week. My reader is filling up, and I'd like to spend some time catching up on reading other people's blogs. :)
Wishing U.S. folks a happy and safe holiday weekend. And to the international folks, a happy and safe plain old ordinary weekend.

Cheers to smoothies!
I like the carrot cake smoothie recipe ... yum.
I have to put the Vitamix on hold too ... might be spending bigger green soon :D
It's Labour Day Weekend here in Canada too ... we celebrate it with *U* :D
Have a great one, Cammy!
I have recently become obsessed with the best chocolate milkshake EVER: 1 cup unsweetened chocolate almond breeze with 1 frozen banana. And I throw in some wheat germ/flaxseed meal/cinnamon. Some spinach could probably be tossed in there too... anyway, it's not EXACTLY a smoothie, but its SUPER TASTY!
I like blenders.
death to FRUGALCAMMY
death to FRUGALCAMMY :)
ok
you're smart.
I just love the ability to cram everything and ANYTHING in mine as I broke about 5 Osterizers doing that same thing.
have a great weekend!
I'd usually rather eat calories than drink them but I do enjoy fruits and ice combined for extra cold drinks during the hot months. My blender is an industrial strength one with all kinds of power but I wish it held more.
I will have to try those.
Mmm...smoothies. I love the green ones and non-green ones too. I feel decadent when I have one...tastes like a milkshake but doesn't have the fat and calories. Long live the blender!
If I can find a decent pumpkin pie smoothie, I'm totally jumping on this wagon.
I like smoothies, but don't make them nearly often enough!
Maybe I'll do some this weekend. The kids eat them up!
Are you sure we can't just eat a piece of carrot cake & not get all the fat & calories??? ;-)
I have a spinach dip on my post today if you want another way to get spinach in.
Have a wonderful weekend! And I must say again, your great attitude towards life is always an inspiration to me!
Me, I would down a smoothie along with my regular breakfast. I can't get past the "if you drink it, it isn't food" mindset! but it sounds really really good!
Have a great holiday Cammy!
Ah, a Vitamix... my dream!
Another way I incorporate spinach is to make pesto that's half basil/half spinach. It's wonderful!
How funny that you would post about smoothies. I bit the bullet (not really) and bought a magic bullet. I've spent the evening listing to ALABAMA football (playing Virgina Tech in Atlanta) and searching for green smoothie recipes. Thanks for the link. My sister has a Vitamix but she likes her Magic Bullet better. She says it is great for fixing for one person. For whatever that may be worth to you. Have a great rest of the weekend and Labor Day.
I love smoothies, especially in the morning! Thanks for the recipes!
Ooo that sounds fab... I never even thought of that!
Now what's the order you put the ingredients in? Sometimes mine work perfectly. Other days I get little bits of chewy green throughout.
I loveeeee spinach- sauteed onion and garlic with some spinach and feta tossed in and then use that to top some chicken or tossed into some pasta is incredible!
Love green smoothies, or as I like to call them, Green Monsters! I started my own Green Monster 30 Day Challenege and have been going for 8 days strong. Each day I try a new recipe and I drink 1 quart a day. It's amazing! I'm saving my pennies for a VitaMix!!
