Product Review: Dove Ultimate

I’m not sure if someone at my gym ratted me out, or if it’s just coincidence, but I was contacted by the Dove PR folks a few weeks ago (at about the same time I joined the new gym) and asked to review Dove ultimate anti-perspirant deodorant. I was curious, so I agreed to accept their offer to ship me free deodorant. In exchange, we all agreed that my resulting review would be my OWN opinion, pass or fail. (Satisfied, FTC?)

According to the folks at Dove, shaving the underarm area reduces the top layer of skin by 20% and reduces moisture by 50%. That’s what causes the nasty irritation that sometimes occurs after shaving. (I always blamed bad razors or, in more recent years, exercising too soon after shaving.)

Dove has come up with what they call the PitiCure™ treatment (think: pedicure but for the underarm.) You can see a video describing the process over at popsugar, but basically a PitiCure involves exfoliating, shaving, and then using their Dove ultimate anti-perspirant deodorant to soothe the area. Here’s their claim:

The tri-moisturizing system found in Dove Ultimate anti-perspirant/deodorant consists of the following moisturizers:
• Humectant – works like a magnet to hold in moisture under the skin’s surface, keeping delicate underarm skin conditioned
• Occlusive Layer – forms a layer on the surface of the skin to prevent moisture loss, which can cause dryness
• Nourishing Moisturizer – Contains natural sunflower oil that is known to help boost the skin’s natural moisture barrier to soothe shaving irritation and help deliver soft, smooth underarm skin with Dove 1/4 Translucent Moisturizers™

That seems like a lot of stuff for less than $5.00 a stick. Wonder if it works. Oh right, that’s my job here.

Okay, then. I received two sticks of deodorant in different scents: light radiance and sheer silk. I’m normally an unscented deodorant kind of gal, so I wasn’t sure how I’d like either of them. My hesitance was confirmed with first test using the light radiance scent, which seems decidedly un-light to me. It’s not something I could slather on and then go to the gym. It’s bad enough I put on eye shadow and mascara before I go; if I start showing up smelling like a flower garden, I’ll be kicked out. And I only just got there!

The sheer silk scent is much, much lighter–dainty even. It’s probably not something I’d choose as a scent, but if unscented wasn’t available, this would be my backup.

For my one-week evaluation purposes, I looked at three components:
Moisturizer- It definitely has a deliciously silky feel to it, and I haven’t noticed any underarm irritation after shaving, even after exercise. (My arm muscles were irritated, but I don’t think we can fault Dove for that, now can we?) To be fair, I might have the same smooth result if I applied plain ol’ moisturizer to my underarms after shaving, but then I’d still have to apply deodorant, and now I’ve added a whole other step to my day. Note to Dove people: add “saves time” to your PitiCure™ benefits list (and remember to give me credit.)

Deodorant- I didn’t notice any unwelcome aroma (other than the day I wore the light radiance), and I didn’t notice anyone scooching away from me at TCBY after my workout. That’s got to be a good sign, right?

Anti-perspirant- I don’t have an issue with perspiration in the normal day-to-day, and at the gym, well, I’m kind of supposed to sweat. Maybe I’m not the best person to evaluate this part of the equation.

So all things considered, I can honestly say that I like the product, and I’ll definitely be trying out the unscented version. If you’d like to try it out for yourself, take advantage of this $1.50 off coupon.

With that, the review (and free advertising) for Dove ultimate antiperspirant deodorant is complete. Feel free to chime in with any comments, tips, or suggestions you have. Or just to say hey! :)

I’m off for errands now…and to ponder how long it takes to get that 20% of underarm skin back. I mean, if I over-shave, I could nick an artery. (Note to self: pick up tourniquet at Walgreen’s.)

Have an absolutely AWESOME Tuesday everyone!

  1. sounds like a smart product. I’m with you on the unscented. I put stuff there to PREVENT smell.. not add it, thankyouverymuch…

  3. Here is my true confession… it has been almost impossible to shave under my arms with my fracture! So I am really doing a number on them when I try. But what I put on there afterward has never bothered me. I much prefer unscented too! One I had purchased by accident has such a strong scent I tossed it after one use. Thanks for the review.

  4. Sounds good to me! I’ll be getting that coupon!

You mentioning TCBY made me nostalgic. We no longer have TCBY’s here in my state. I miss them. My favorite, White chocolate mousse yogurt with yogurt covered raisins. Yum! Just thought I’d share that with ya. :)

  5. I don’t think we can put a tourniquet on an armpit :-)

We probably put too many chemicals on ourselves.

  6. Hey …

I usually use the unscented Suave ’cause I’m cheap and it works just as good if not better than the expensive stuff. I’m going to print the coupon and pick it up the next time and see if I notice any difference. When I first started working out hard I noticed I got lots of pimples in and around my armpit area but it has gotten much better in the last month or so. Maybe my body was just getting used to all that extra sweat. 😉

  7. Just wanted to pop in and say “hi!” I’ve missed reading your blog and glad to hear you are doing well! I also checked out your before and after pics again and have just got to say- “You are amazing!”

  8. I’m always on the lookout for good deodorants, as I sweat a lot. (Overweight, nervous sweat person, etc.) Dove has always been kind to my sensitive skin, and most (all?) of their products I use don’t have sulfur in them (which I react to) – a component that is bad for you but is in the majority of all bath products (from shampoo to soap) out there.

    Yay Dove!

  9. Thx for the review Cammy! I like the Secret Clinical strength stuff. They have a couple scents I like including their powder fresh scent which I find just right without being that perfume smell to me. It is expensive but I went back to other stuff & did not compare to this for me.

I tried the Dove brand of this too but could not find a scent that I liked & could handle… they did not have a powder fresh scent. I will rethink though… r
