I turn down most requests for snack-y product reviews. For one thing, I don’t need to be doing a bunch of extra snacking and for another, I try to limit my purchase of packaged products. When I want a salty, crunchy snack, I go for the air pop or I make myself some tortilla chips.
That’s all fine and good, but sometimes a gal just wants to hear the crinkle-crack of cellophane as she reaches in and grabs a salty, crunchy prepared-by-someone-else snack (like when she’s on a road trip and getting a wee bit weary of fruit and almonds). So when the Snikiddy folks reached out, dangling offers of “healthier” cheese puffs in front of me, I caved in record time. (Nice to have a personal best in something this month.)
First, A Word about the Company
Since I don’t spend much time on the snack aisle of the grocery store, I hadn’t heard of Snikiddy before. In addition to the cheese puff allure, I was also intrigued by, IMO, the coolest company name EVER! A trip to the Snikiddy website (my version of due diligence) proved they were legitimate and also told the story behind the company name. They passed my stringent reviewee test.
The sample snack box arrived on Thursday, just in time for sharing with my Nashville buddies, Debby and Sharon. In addition to the promised cheese puffs, I received All-Natural Baked Fries and Eat Your Vegetables™ Chips. I ran off to Nashville without the Cheese Puffs (completely by accident, I promise), so Debby and Sharon were able to help taste-drive only the Fries and Chips. We’ll start there.

The PR pitch:
Eat Your Vegetables™ are made with a unique blend including sweet potatoes, carrots, and navy beans. These snacks offer an excellent source of Vitamin A and more fiber and protein than most other snack products. And of course, these are also gluten and wheat free, cholesterol free, and free of trans fats, high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils and preservatives. Available in these flavors: Sea Salt, Sour Cream & Onion, Jalapeño Ranch
Yum! Perhaps, too Yum! We all wondered if these might be a little too tempting to have around the house on a regular basis. They were crunchy and had the flavor of fat without the greasiness. Also, a liberal (to me) use of garlic and onion powders made them very flavorful. For a product with a lead ingredient of navy beans, that’s quite the accomplishment!
I’m sad to report that I will not be trying these with salsa, as I had hoped to do, because there was a horrible accident involving a sudden stop, my suitcase (formerly) on the back seat, and the snack bag on the floorboard, but I will be enjoying them in tiny little bits on my turkey taco salad later this week. (Actually, now that I think about it, these would probably be awesome as a flavorful addition to any salad.)

These snacks are gluten and wheat free, and free of artificial colors or preservatives, high fructose corn syrup, trans fats, hydrogenated oils, or cholesterol. They are baked in a nut-free facility. Available in these flavors: Sea Salt, Cheddar Cheese, Original Seasoning, Bold Buffalo, Southwest Cheddar, Barbeque and Classic Ketchup.
Debby and I liked these more than Sharon did, but none of us were wild about them. We each crunched only a few fries and just didn’t taste much flavor. I tried them again yesterday with a half serving alongside my lunch sandwich, and after the 5th or 6th bite, I started picking up a bit of cheesy flavor. Still not as enjoyable as the Eat Your Vegetable Chips, though.

I couldn’t wait until the weekend to sample the Cheese Puffs, so when the snack box arrived, I carefully snipped a one-puff opening in the top of the package and poured out three puffs for sampling. MMMmmm, cheesy. Crunchy. Satisfying. I liked them! And much to my surprise three puffs were enough! On Sunday, I tried another three puffs with the same results–a nice cheesy crunch and I was satisfied with that. Considering you get about a million (or 95-100) of these for 120 calories, I’m not worried about calorie or processed-food overload. I’ll definitely buy them again someday. That may be next year, given the super-small servings I’m eating!
We saw the Snickiddy snacks at Whole Foods on Saturday, and they were priced at $2.69, I believe, for a 4-oz. bag. That’s not as large a bag as similar (less healthy) chip-type snacks, but if you find fewer chips more satisfying and they’re healthier (if not a whole food), then you come out ahead. Snikiddy snacks are also sold at other leading grocers, including Kroger, Giant, Safeway, etc. Even Toys ‘r Us is in on the game! You an also buy them on Amazon!
Snikiddy snacks are not whole food. For that we have other sections of the grocery. But if you’re looking for a snack-type food made from ingredients that are healthier than some other packaged alternatives, I can honestly recommend these as a good choice to try.
