Happy Tunes

As this winter weather drags on (and on), I’m having to really work at staying in, or near, my happy place. Some days are better than others, and so far I’m nowhere close to throwing in the towel. That said, I found Kirsty Bartholomew’s article, 5 Strategies When You Feel Like Giving Up, to be an especially helpful reminder of some really good tools for hanging on instead of letting go. Specifically helpful for me: long walks and happy music, preferably together!

Since the weather’s not exactly conducive to long walks just now, I’m relying on happy tunes while I work on some house projects. I made myself a “happy” playlist, songs almost guaranteed to lift my mood. I can’t not sing along when these songs are playing. That they also speed up my walking (or my energy for household chores) is just a bonus.

Here’s a look at the tunes on my “happy list”:

For some songs, it’s the words that I find cheery. For others, it’s the music. There are at least a couple on the list because they evoke a happy memory. Whatever the reason they’re on the list, it’s nice having a go-to resource for those days when I’m slogging around on blah overload.

What songs would make up your happy tunes playlist?

  1. Oh – you have some great songs on that list. I love the Bare-Naked Ladies If I had a Million Dollars!!!
One of my happy songs is that Robin Thicke song – Blurred Lines – I know the lyrics are kind of bad but it is so catchy!!!

    • What a Wonderful World is one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. Unfortunately, it is one I’ve designated to be played at my (far in the future, I hope) funeral. Thus, it can’t be on my ‘happy list’. :)

Footloose would be a fantastic song to add to the mix! Thank you for that nudge, Kathy!

  2. Ha! I was going to skip this one because I never know the songs people choose. But I know (and like) a lot of those songs you have on your list! And I LOVE the songs mentioned in the two comments-If I had a million dollars and of course, what a wonderful world. Oh, I feel happier just thinking about some of those songs. I gotta get me a playlist!

    • As far as I’m concerned, “happy” songs don’t have to be from the current decade. Or the current century, for that matter. :) Get thee a playlist!

  3. Lately I’ve been loving the song Pompeii by Bastille. It feels really upbeat to me! And yes, I love all the songs on your list! Barenaked Ladies are so underrated!

    • Ooh, I wasn’t familiar with that one. Just listened to a clip on itunes and will add it to my growing download list. I don’t know if it will make my happy tunes, but I do like the music! Thank you!

  4. How about “Happy” by Pharrell Williams. I love it! And did you know he recorded a 24 hour video with this song? It’s the song over and over but what is happening in the video depends on what time it is. It’s so fun to look at because you can actually move the clock yourself at will. You can see the video at 24hoursofhappy.com

Also “Got to Give it Up” by Marvin Gaye, “Never Too Much” by Luther Vandross and “Love on Top” my favorite Beyonce song!

  5. I forget to play music when I’m home, but you are so right – a happy, peppy playlist does so much for the spirit. I like a lot of the songs on your list – I’d add Boogie Fever, Bandstand Boogie, That Thing You Do…oh, I could go on and on!

  6. Oh yes music is so good for the soul! I love to listen while I clean house and cook. I am a big fan of Pandora and love to listen to a variety of artists. The Golden Oldies are some of my favorites – anything by James Taylor, Fleetwood Mac, Carol King and the list goes on.

  7. “I Can See Clearly Now” by Johnny Nash. Didn’t even realize I knew this song until one day I was walking thru a parking lot just feeling happy about the direction my life was going (after a period of NOT) and this song popped into my head. It’s kinda become an anthem of good times for me.
